Kaleidoscope

from BIOGRAPHY I by Erik Ian Walker

about

Opening section of this song was originally composed about 1970, using my brother Jeff's lyrics, which he had left lying around the house after he had moved out. I was always looking for words to make up music to, and finding his folder of poems and lyrics was a bit of a gold mine. This one is my favorite. The second half of the song, after the piano solo, is from the same folder, and I always found it related, so this was added when I recorded this piece in 2006.

lyrics

Dance and whirl like petals blown,
That brush across your face,
And touch you with a velvet hand in
Some enchanted place
Red and green and blue they cross the blackness of your mine
Stir them with a slender hand and draw out what you find.

To remember former days,
A melancholy thing
Stretch a slender silver strand
That quivers as you sing

Shadows creep upon us all
To wash away our hopes,
But you can seal you dreams away
In this kaleidoscope.

Close you eyelids tight and dream
The things your mind will see,
And feel your soul rejoice and sing,
At what you are to be.

Warm breezes blow across the void
And tickle in your ears,
The ocean stops for lonesome songs
And instants swallow years...

(interlude)

Breathing, breathing
In and out
Someone shouting voices fade
Listening in my tower of jade
Heartbeats stirring idle flesh
While spiders weave a silken mesh
Crying crying, gulls that fly
Slowly drifting on the wind
Echoed sounds that voices send
Within the halls below me
Time is ebbing like the sea
Pulsing throbbing in my veins
Strong and warming currents flow
Waves of color was and go
Seashore tides that ebb and fade
and ebb and fade and ebb and fade
